After months of rigorous preparation by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) and months of campaigns by political parties and their candidates, the Ondo State governorship election holds today.

Residents are expected to gather at different polling units within the state to determine who will govern them for another four years. It is either the continuity of the incumbent governor, Rotimi Akeredolu, or the election of a new governor from a different party.

Though INEC has said there will be names of 17 political parties on the ballot papers, only three are major contenders.

Asides Mr Akeredolu of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), the other two are Eyitayo Jegede of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and Agboola Ajayi of the Zenith Labour Party (ZLP).

Rotimi Akeredolu, Eyitayo Jegede and Agboola Ajayi

Four years ago, Mr Akeredolu and Mr Ajayi contested on a joint ticket to defeat Mr Jegede. But Mr Ajayi, who is the incumbent deputy governor, switched parties in the build up to today’s election to challenge his boss and Mr Jegede.

While INEC said there 1,822,346 registered voters, only 1,478,460 PVCs were collected and they will be the eligible voters in today’s poll.

Senator Nicholas Tofowomo votes

The senator representing Ondo South at the National Assembly, Nicholas Tofowomo, has berated security officials in his polling unit for allegedly working in interest of the ruling APC.

Mr Tofowomo, on crutches, casted his vote at exactly 9:42am at polling unit 001, ward 03, Ile-Oluji/Oke-Igbo local government area.

In an exclusive interview with PREMIUM TIMES, the senator said “all is not well and good in my polling unit.”

“This election is supposed to be free and fair but this police officer (he pointed) has been aiding APC. Quote me anywhere, that is the police officer there,” Mr Tofowomo alleged, pointing at a female police officer standing in close proximity with the voting post.

When this reporter asked the senator to present evidence to back his allegation, he simply backed on his supporters who claimed to have seen the female police collecting money from a party agent.

PREMIUM TIMES also approached the alleged police officer with the name tag “KENNY” for comments on the allegation, she said she has nothing to say.

Speaking on his expectation at the end of the exercise, Mr Tofowomo said “as a politician, I can’t predict what would be the outcome of the election but I would be happy if my party (PDP) wins.”

The Ondo South senator once served as the commissioner for transport during the administration of Olusegun Mimiko.

He defeated Yele Omogunwa, at the February 2019 supplementary election in the region and suffered a bone fracture from a car accident in early September 2019.

Misunderstanding between an electorate and INEC officials over inability of card reader to authenticate voter card.

Also, there is a low turn out of voters here. Although, the officials assured the party agents are mobilizing their members to come out and vote.
